How It Works

Understanding currency conversion

Exchange rates tell you how much of one currency you get for another. Here's everything you need to know to use this tool with confidence.

Step 1 — Enter your amount

Type in any amount you want to convert. You can use decimals — for example, 1500.50. The converter accepts any positive number.

Step 2 — Select your currencies

Choose the currency you're converting from and the currency you want to convert to. Use the swap button to instantly reverse the direction.

Step 3 — Get your result

Click Convert or simply change a currency to see the result instantly. The 1-unit rate and data date are shown below the result.

What do exchange rates actually mean?

What is an exchange rate?

An exchange rate is the price of one currency expressed in terms of another. For example, if USD/NGN = 1,600, it means 1 US Dollar buys 1,600 Nigerian Naira at that moment.

Where do these rates come from?

Rates on this tool come from the European Central Bank (ECB) via Frankfurter, a free open-source API. The ECB publishes reference rates daily at around 16:00 CET.

Are these the rates I'll get at the bank?

No. Banks, bureaux de change, and payment providers add their own margin on top of the interbank rate shown here. This tool shows the mid-market reference rate — the fairest benchmark for comparison.

How often do rates change?

Currency markets move 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. The ECB reference rates used here update once daily. For real-time trading rates, consult your broker or trading platform.

What is the inverse rate?

The inverse rate is the reverse exchange rate. If 1 USD = 0.92 EUR, the inverse is 1 EUR = 1.087 USD. Use it when you want to think about a transaction from the other currency's perspective.

Why does NGN not appear sometimes?

The Nigerian Naira (NGN) is not part of the ECB's official reference rate basket. When it doesn't appear, it means the data provider doesn't have a confirmed rate for that day. Try again later or check the Markets page for available pairs.
